From May to June of 2024, I worked as a UX/UI Intern with the Vodafone Group design team at their Paddington HQ.

During this time, I collaborated cross-functionally with UX, UI, user research, and service design teams, predominantly focused on building components within the design system and ensuring consistency across digital products.

Vodafone’s Global Design System

I joined during a pivotal phase of Source, Vodafone’s global design system, evolving in 2024 as the team unified over ten fragmented market-specific systems into a single scalable library deployed across EMEA and Africa.

Design Approach

Developed a scalable design system using modular components in Figma, with assets and guidelines accessible through Source, Vodafone’s global design system. The approach prioritised simplicity, accessibility, and localisation to ensure consistent, adaptable solutions across multiple platforms and markets.

Contribution

Collaborated with the team to consolidate 10+ fragmented market-specific design systems (including ReSource and Brix) across EMEA and Africa into a unified global library. Worked closely with design leads and engineers to improve handoff through aligned design tokens and naming conventions, advancing Source as a scalable, trusted foundation ensuring consistency across markets.

Accessibility

Supported the implementation of WCAG 2.2 practices across Source components and user flows—helping to improve accessibility beyond colour contrast with comprehensive UX guidelines.

My role involved building, refining, and maintaining design components to ensure a consistent and accessible user experience across Vodafone’s suite of digital products. Contributed to the Figma component library, maintaining consistency, accessibility, and localisation across diverse markets—from RTL language support to regional iconography.

Localisation

Given Vodafone’s vast presence across EMEA, the design system had to support multiple languages, regional preferences, and cultural nuances—from text direction and character count to colour symbolism and iconography. This complexity made consistency a real challenge.

Accessibility

Supported the implementation of WCAG 2.2 practices across Source components and user flows—helping to improve accessibility beyond colour contrast with comprehensive UX guidelines.

Iconography

Assisted in building and refining Vodafone’s icon library within the broader Source design system, ensuring icons aligned with Vodafone brand guidelines and met the diverse needs of EMEA markets. Collaborated closely with designers and engineers to implement icons that supported accessibility, localisation, and consistency across Vodafone’s digital products.

Design Approach

Created scalable, vector-based icons in Figma with a focus on clarity, simplicity, and usability across various screen sizes. Icons were built to align with Vodafone’s brand guidelines while maintaining flexibility for future use cases.

Localisation

Considered cultural and linguistic nuances across EMEA when designing icons, ensuring relevance and clarity for diverse markets.

Collaboration

Worked closely with designers and engineers to integrate icons into the system and align with front-end implementation standards.

Building UI for Vodafone's One App

Utilised Vodafone’s design system and component library to create intuitive and scalable interfaces for Vodafone's One App. By leveraging reusable, modular components, I ensured visual consistency and functional coherence across multiple screens. The design process followed brand guidelines, prioritising accessibility and responsiveness to deliver a seamless and user-friendly experience across devices.

Objective

To create product and service outcomes aligned with a specific marketing requirement for the Greek market, ensuring the Vodafone One app meets local user needs and expectations while maintaining brand consistency.

Localisation

Designing for the Greek market requires considering cultural preferences, user behavior, regulations, and accessibility to create an intuitive and relevant design within the limits of Vodafone’s existing components library.

Challenges

Balancing usage details without overwhelming users required a clear visual hierarchy and strong accessibility to create an intuitive and seamless experience.
